On Parliament Hill, Liberal MPs Anju Dhillon, Pam Damoff, and Ya’ara Saks hold a news conference to discuss the Senate’s passage of Dhillon’s private member’s bill (C-233), which includes Keira’s Law. The legislation will come into effect 30 days after receiving royal assent.
Named after Keira Kagan, the law would establish and enhance continuing education seminars for judges on matters related to intimate partner violence and coercive control. Four-year-old Keira was killed in an apparent murder-suicide by her father in 2020 after she was ordered into his care unsupervised, despite warning signs of abuse. Her mother and stepfather, Jennifer Kagan and Philip Viater, also take part in the news conference.
