At a news conference on Parliament Hill, NDP democratic reform critic Daniel Blaikie discusses his private member’s motion to give the House of Commons more say over when Parliaments are dissolved and prorogued. Motion M-79 proposes to amend the standing orders of the House of Commons regarding confidence votes and aims to curb the ability of prime ministers to prorogue Parliament in order to avoid accountability. The first hour of debate on M-79 took place on May 12.
