Burning Buildings & Police Brutality: Macron's France

French President Macron, the man that Justin Trudeau looks up to as a role model, has instituted a thug police state in France. Widespread protests throughout France have gathered millions of discontented citizens. Police violence has been condemned by multiple human rights watch groups.

LDH, a French human rights group offered a public statement: “After the announcement of the passage in force of its [pension] reform, the @gouvernementFR undermines the right of protest of citizens by making a disproportionate and dangerous use of public force. The #LDH is worried about this anti-democratic turn.”

Amnesty International tweeted “We warn of the excessive use of force and abusive arrests,” and independent bodies, including the National Consultative Commission on Human Rights, have criticized French police for resorting to excessive force and for making preventative arrests that could amount to arbitrary deprivation of liberty.

The French Defender of Rights noted on March 21 that “this practice may induce a risk of disproportionately resorting to custodial measures and fostering tensions.”

According to Reporters Without Borders, “Several clearly identifiable journalists were assaulted by security forces while covering protests against the pension reform.”

On March 20, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Association warned French authorities that “peaceful demonstrations are a fundamental right that the authorities must guarantee and protect. Law enforcement officers must facilitate them and avoid excessive use of force.”

Macron is unmoved. In a fit of irony, he condemned unrest at pension reform protests, saying “violence has no place in a democracy.”
