Final Fantasy 4 Ultima (SNES ROM Hack) - Part 39: Superbosses Crystal Dragon & Crystals

With all of the superbosses on the Blue Planet completed, it's time to go back to the moon's surface where two more Superbosses await! First up is the Crystal Dragon, which can be found in the Crater Cave to the south of the Hummingway Cave and east of the Crystal Spire, and shares his battle sprite with the Kaiser Dragon from Final Fantasy 6 Advance. The Crystal Dragon is another Barrier Change boss like Melusine, except his weakness changes every time you hit him. When the fight starts, he can only be hit by magic, and then when you hit him with magic, he'll become weak to physical attacks. Then when you hit him with a physical attack, he'll become weak to magic again, and then alternate with each hit. His attacks are definitely no slouch either. Be sure to pay attention to what his current weakness is, because if you use a regular attack when he's weak to magic or vice versa, he will counter with one of two deadly attacks (Crush or Eclipse) which can easily one-shot a party member. He will also use Eclipse if you try to use Wall after dispelling it with Black Hole, so don't do it! When his HP gets low enough, he'll start countering everything with physical attacks that deal 15,000 damage to a character while healing it for the same amount, so get Blink on everyone to avoid those attacks. He'll also maintain the weakness he had when he entered the last phase for the rest of the fight. His Crystallize attack hits incredibly hard, always taking out half of your whole party's maximum HP, so always have Rosa heal and have Rydia take care of his magic weakness and Cecil take care of his physical weakness. Killing the Crystal Dragon will give you the Lunar Helm and the Lunar Shield as well as teaching Rydia and Palom the Gravity spell, Edge the Illusion spell (basically Full-Party Blink), Paladin Cecil the Reflect spell (basically Full-Party Wall), and Dark Knight Cecil the Black Hole spell, as well as opening Kokkol Shop #3.

With the spells we learned from the Crystal Dragon, we can take on another superboss in the Four Crystals, located in the Crystal Spire where we fought Selene earlier. The Illusion and Reflect spells we got from the Crystal Dragon really come in handy here, as one cast from them will make you almost untouchable. So have Edge and Cecil lead with them. The rest of the fight you'll want to have everyone use their most powerful AOE spells (Bahamut for Rydia, Ultima for Rosa, Atom Bomb for Edge, and AOE attack items like M. Cannons for Cecil and Kain). In their final phase, the Crystals can one-shot you with a physical attack (which Illusion counters), cast Megaflare (which Reflect bounces back at them), or use Crush (which pierces both spells and insta-kills one character unless you have the equipment to absorb dark damage). With luck, the Crystals will Megaflare themselves to death, and you will be rewarded the Crystal Ring and the Hero Medal, which will grant you access to the final shop of the game after killing the final Superboss.
