Old Paint Removal Using Heat

Remove old hardened paint from any surface using a torch. Use the information in this video at your own risk. Using a Propane or Mapp gas torch and a scraper for removing old paint is very fast and easy, but there are certain risks involved. Never get the paint too hot, lead based paints melt at 1630 °F which will emit fumes harmful to your health, keep the temperature of the paint as low as possible. Remove all combustibles from the surrounding area, have a fire extinguisher handy, vacuum up all debris in the area like leaves etc. do not do this right before you have to leave the area to go somewhere, I suggest you be in the area for a couple hours afterwards just in case you get something a little too hot and create embers. If you use a vacuum cleaner as I do to vacuum up the scraped off paint, you could vacuum up some embers, so put the vacuum somewhere that it will not start a fire. Always scrape away from your body.
