First ever high-res images of supermassive black hole
The first supermassive black hole to be imaged has gotten a brand-new profile picture. After releasing the fuzzy donut image back in 2019, the research team at Princeton has been busy crunching the data, and has produced high-resolution images and animations of the supermassive black hole. The black hole in question is at the heart of the M87 galaxy, just down the road from us at 55 million light years away.
The pictures show that the ring around the black hole is significantly smaller than first thought, and the black hole is surprisingly darker than thought. Spinal Tap would approve. The ring is formed of matter falling into the black hole, being violently heated and ripped apart as it’s accelerated towards oblivion, but being smaller than thought could shed new light on gaps in our understanding of the universe.
