In this generation, a minister of the gospel can scarcely be popular in the pulpit if he bears down hard on the subject of conscience. What is happening to us in the Christian church that we no longer believe in the human conscience? God has given us a faithful witness inside our own beings-a witness able to single each of us out and reveal our loneliness-the loneliness of the individual in a vast, unexplored universe destined to meet an angry God. That is the terror of the conscience.
