The Xbox Series S is a pretty remarkable little machine. It has access to the full Xbox digital library of games, plus Gamepass, with enhanced visuals over the previous generation. Due to the fact that it does not have an optical drive, it also is considerably smaller than other systems of this generation. So what if you could take that small system and make it portable, similar to a pseudo-gaming laptop. Well, the team at Depgi have a number of portable gaming monitors that will try to do just that. Let's take a look.
There are three different sizes in the Depgi monitor family for the Xbox Series S, 11.6" and 12.5" 1080P models, and the 15.6" 144Hz 2K display. So as you can see, they have different models based on monitor size, your budget, and the features you are looking for. They sent us their largest 15.6-inch display, which also features 2K visuals, 144 Hertz refresh rate, remote control, and more.
One of the things I was disappointed in was the fact that it does require its own dedicated power supply. I was hoping they would utilize one of the USB ports to draw power off the system, then you only have to worry about connecting your Xbox Series S to power. Unfortunately, that is not the case and it actually has its own power brick.
On the back of the monitor, you have two HDMI inputs, one for 60Hz and one for 144Hz refresh rates, a pair of headphone jacks, and your power jack. Installing the Xbox Series S into the shroud was a little bit of a pain, but eventually, I got everything installed. The one thing I did not notice initially was that the white is not quite the same white as the Xbox Series S, it's a little bit grayer.
Upon powering up the monitor, it was very similar to what I've experienced with other portable monitors from LePow and WiMaxit. The menu system was virtually identical, however, this did include a wireless remote control for you to tweak your settings with. I found the remote to be imprecise and did not always register my button presses. Not to worry, there's a full slate of function buttons in the top right section of the monitor base.
I connected the included HDMI cable to the Xbox Series S and the 144Hz input and got to playing. I did go into my settings and make sure that I had the visual set to 1440p and not 1080p, which is what my system defaulted to when I powered it on. That was interesting. I could not turn HDR on in the Xbox menu as it appears that's only for when you're utilizing a 4K television. Interesting.
Similar to other gaming monitors, I felt the colors were somewhat soft, the black levels fairly low, but we'll say the responsiveness was pretty good. Playing F1 22 I noticed myself turning in to a corner a little bit early, and on MLB The Show 22 I had to adjust my timing for the pitching and hitting meters to make sure that I was not doing everything a bit early. That's the thing with latency and delay, eventually, you adapt and overcome subconsciously to what your eyes are seeing. This had better responsiveness than what my Vizio television has.
Why it RoX:
- Converts your Xbox Series S into a portable gaming laptop
- Speakers are better than portable gaming monitors
- Included remote control
- Good responsiveness
- Two integrated headphone jacks
- Different sizes available depending on need and budget
- Very good viewing angles
What could be improved:
- Expensive
- Imprecise responsiveness for remote control
- Low black levels
- Requires separate power supply
Should you buy one?
If you're looking to take your Xbox Series S on the go with you, this is a really neat setup. The monitor is surprisingly responsive, and everything gets encapsulated into a convenient package. Overall responsiveness was decent to very good, but the black levels and overall picture were somewhat washed out. In the end, this is very similar to other gaming monitors that are out there, simply in a prettier shroud, better speaker quality, and remote control. You'll have to decide if form factor and convenience are worth the extra money, as those are truly what you are paying for.
