‘The Last Full Measure’ tells the story of Pararescueman Medic William H. Pitsenbarger, who personally saved more than sixty men during the battle of Xi Cam My in the Vietnam War. Despite being offered a chance to escape on the last helicopter out of combat he stayed behind to help his fellow Americans.

This video walks you through the Vietnam War era military history of the battle of Xa Cam My. In the early days of the war in 1966 the US Armed Forces were fighting to keep hold of Saigon.

The soldiers of the Army's 1st Infantry Division, Charlie Company 16th regiment walked into a trap and quickly found themselves surrounded by the enemy Viet Cong Forces. The Air Force Para Rescue helicopters flew to their aid without hesitation when no one else would.

The soldiers in this unit considered themselves professional so they weren’t made of many draftees at this point. From first hand interviews from survivors of this battle they said they enlisted to do their duty to their country. They wanted to stop the communists from taking over Vietnam, this isn’t about whether the war was right or wrong, this just gives us some insight into what the troops on the ground believed they were fighting for.

So how did it get to the point where the battle became that bad? There was a mix of mistakes and bad luck that lead to the situation becoming that dire. Here’s how they got there.

Operation Abilene was designed to send this rifle company with the strength of only about 134 soldiers out into the jungle as bait. They were looking for the elusive D800 battalion of the Viet Cong who had the strength of over 500 soldiers. The Vietcong had three machine gun positions with stationary 50 caliber machine guns. This massive caliber weapon can chew through trees.

They also had additional 30 caliber machine guns. their main battle rifle was a variant of the soviet ak-47. It was the chinese made type 56 assault rifle firing a 7.62 round.

Chris Cappy gives you a behind the scenes look at the story of Staff Sergeant Pitsenbarger and the heroic actions he took that fateful day in Vietnam.
