Stop Mounting Your M-26 Modular Shotgun!

The Army's favorite buzzword "modular" went to town on this new M-26 MASS Shotgun. You can stick it under your M-4 Rifle or you can make it a stand alone shotgun that you whip out of your backpack. The US Military loves their lethal accessories.

Breaching and entering during urban operations is difficult. This M-26 shotgun makes it a lot easier.

Sure the M-26 isn't exactly brand new. It's been around since 2012. But It's relatively new compared to the Mossberg 500 shotgun which has been around since the 1960's. The Mossberg 500 has been used by military and police forces to great effect since then. It's a legendary piece of equipment.

The real question is should you mount this shotgun to the bottom of your M-4 rifle or not?

With the M26 underslung the rifle is bulky, impossible to go prone with and way heavier. I can just picture how excited everyone was in that meeting when they unveiled what an absolute force multiplier this shotgun would be. It would add so much lethality to each soldier. The M26 takes the military's favorite buzz words “modular” “lethal” “force multiplier” and slams it into one 12 gauge shell while forgetting my favorite buzz word which “practical” is the M26 practical as an underslung shotgun?

The types of ammo provided for the M26 includes breaching shells and non lethals. I’m going to assume everyone here knows how a regular 12 gauge shotgun shell works so instead I’ll explain how a breaching shell works. It’s encased in wax and have a kind of metal dust that blows away the hinges without leaving any risk of penetrating through the door into the room. Anytime you use a shotgun for breaching like this you’re supposed to have the muzzle at a safe distance from the door, often you’ll have a standoff device at the end of the barrel to make sure you’re idiot proof against yourself.

So what came before the M26? The Mosberg 500 shotgun is legendary. It was used by the Army and the Marine Corps since 1960. It has the magazine tube located below the barrel and screwed into the receiver. The weapon is designed from head to toe to be treated poorly in rough conditions and still be able to operate. In 2009 the Mossberg was upgraded and given a collapsible stock and rail system.
