Based on other reviews I decided to try and get one of the "version 2" saws which still supported the LED mount.
Here is the litany of places I called and contacted who did *not* have the correct version: Lowes in Concord, Lowes in Dublin, Lowes in San Francisco, Maxtool (online). And here are the places I contacted but could not determine if they had it or not: CPO Power Tools online (waited 5 minutes on the sales line but no one picked up), Acme Tools (need to call back during biz hours to speak to technical sales), Handys Hardware (no phone number to call), ToolsAndMore.us (called but no answer), Expresstools.com (called and left VM), TylerTool.com (they may have it but can not do a warehouse check to verify), Rockler Woodworking and Hardware (none in store, may have in warehouse but can not check), CB Tool Group (left VM).Suffice to say, I was very motivated to track down anywhere which had the v2.
Finally, I found a place that had it: Lowes in South San Francisco. I got their last one, although at the time of this writing the display model on the floor is also a v2.
So if you are also on a quest to track down a v2, call them quick and get them to box up the floor model.Sorry this review does not include any actual comments about the functionality of the saw itself.
But based on how difficult it was to track down the v2 I wanted to leave this information.A previous reviewer mentioned how to distinguish the v2 from the v3... yellow box with a black top equals v3.
That is reliable info.
One additional point Id like to add is that the v2 box says something along the lines of "DW7187 LED sight kit supported." Hope this review saves someone else some time.Update (5/9/2013) got the miter saw and everything looks a-OK. Uploaded 3 product images to show exactly how you can tell which box is the correct box for v2.
Also, there is a really handy video about how to mount the light kit on this page: http://dewaltownersgroup.com/index.php?topic=120.0
My first miter saw!!!
Very happy clean cuts, an fortunately I didnt get my blades but I went to Home Depot and bought one for fine cuts because it comes with one but it is only to cut 4x2 or 4x4 well Im not an expert so if this review helps someone out there or if you guys have any suggestions I appreciate it.
I bought the saw because the cost to rent a similar one for a weekend was only a little less but with this saw, I ended up cutting and installing nearly 300 linear feet of baseboards in one day.
Now I have a line of neighbors wanting to borrow it. Easy to set up and attach to your stand. Easy to operate. I love the 5-second brake feature and it comes with a little bag you can place over the exhaust to help control dust.
I have been using a much smaller saw for years and didnt know what I was missing out on till I used a friends 12" Dewalt saw. I came home and ordered one for me, plus the smaller of the stands offered.
I already have a couple projects planned. No more placing the saw on the ground for me.
I just received this saw, and did some serious close inspection of the construction... I work in design, and also am a journeyman toolmaker, so I am very picky about quality...
This saw will be used for home projects only.I am very happy with the overall quality, and build of the saw. I checked the initial cuts for squareness, and straightness...
I was impressed with the performance.I added a couple pics for closer looks at the mechanics... I would recommend this saw to a friend... Happy building!!
We bought this saw for the most ambitious reno project weve done so far - a custom beadboard ceiling with trim and crown molding (see pic). Made every trim and molding cut with the DW715 (couldnt cut the panels with it of course).
