Artificial sweeteners

Artificial sweeteners, or sugar substitutes, are chemicals added to some foods and beverages to make them taste sweet.

While many people use artificial sweeteners to improve their health and cut back on sugar intake, research has shown that consuming them may actually be harmful.

While artificial sweeteners do not increase blood sugar levels, they do increase insulin levels in the blood. Because of their sweet taste, the pancreas mistakes them for sugar, and releases insulin as a response to help lower blood sugar levels. Having frequently increased insulin levels can lead to insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes over time due to decreased insulin receptor activity.

Gut microbiota react differently to artificial sweeteners than to real sugar. Saccharin and sucralose have been found to shift the populations of gut microbiota, and have been linked to dysbiosis in humans.
