NATO Secretary General it pushes Finland to join alliance without delays

Hungary’s decision to ratify Finland’s Nato membership may be delayed again.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s chief of staff, Gergely Gulyás, said on Saturday that the decision will be delayed until the end of March. The ratification process has been stalled in the Hungarian parliament since July. Originally, it was expected to be completed last autumn.

According to the preliminary calendar, negotiations between parliamentary groups were to start next week, and the vote could have taken place on 6 March.

According to Gulyás, however, the groups need more time for negotiations.

"Parliament will put this on the agenda on Monday and start debating the legislation next week," Gulyás told a news conference.

"Based on Hungarian procedure, adopting legislation takes about four weeks, so it follows that Parliament can have a vote on this sometime in the second half of March, in the week of 21 March."

Orbán has previously said he supported the ratification of Nato membership for Finland and Sweden. On Friday, however, he expressed for the first time his concern about the two Nordic countries’ Nato membership.
