In this restoration, I started with a very old and rusty grinder that I found in the junk department on ebay classifieds. The mechanics of the grinder was still intact and it could be turned freely with some force, but some parts on the grinder were replaced provisionally.
As usual, I started the restoration by first completely disassembling the antique tool. This worked surprisingly well, despite all the rust almost all the screws could be loosened. I only had to cut one screw loose and replace it later with a custom one.
Both a piece of paper with old German writing and a D.R.G.M (Deutsches Reichs-Gebrauchsmuster) stamp suggest that thehand cranked grinder was made before 1941. Somewhat in the 1930's I would judge by its appearance.
Unfortunately, a stamp could not be found.
After I carefully cleaned everything, the parts were sandblasted. Since I don't have access to a sandblaster at the moment, Mister Patina helped me out. In exchange for an old piece of wood and a beer, he sandblasted all the parts for me and sent me his own little restoration video.
I then sorted the components of the old tool and partially cold blued, hot blued, polished or painted them. My goal in the restoration was to accentuate the sweeping tool body with a powerful color and restore it to perfect condition. The attachments in turn had to be preserved to indicate their age. A few polished highlights round out the overall look and emphasize the functional aesthetics of days gone by.
Once again, I had a lot of fun with this restoration project and I'm happy to share the result with you.
