Preparing The Off Grid Homestead For A Blizzard

Monday I was busy the whole day preparing for the blizzard which was to blast the area all day Monday and Tuesday. Here is what I did and how I prepared my off grid homestead for the mega blizzard which was to break records all around.

My top priority of the day was to cut and haul fire wood over to the front of the tiny house on wheels. In case I got more than a foot of snow as predicted I wanted to have a full supply of fire wood ready at hand and within easy reach.

I also set up a pallet on the side of my door to the tiny house and then put a piece of OSB board up against the house for protection. Then I stacked the fire wood up in the shelter provided by these boards.

I strapped a large tarp over the pallet and draped it over my fire wood.

I cut a lot more wood that was dead and standing in the nearby woods and hauled it over to the tiny house.

My parents sent me a package which arrived just at the right time. I have a new pair of protective chaps and a helmet for chain saw work. This makes me feel a lot safer cutting wood with my chain saw. The helmet comes with protective goggles, ear protection and a face screen.

I laid my solar panels down flat in case I got hit with the heavy winds they were predicting.

I pushed and pulled on the wind turbine tower to see if it would be ok and it was frozen to the ground solidly. With the little 350 watt wind turbine on the tower I figured there would not be too much pressure on it. It should stand fine.

As for the chickens I have a snow shovel on hand and am ready to dig them out if needed.

I figured it would be a long, late night so I got plenty of rest, going to bed early in case the storm kept me up all night.

They said this storm could break records so I wanted to be prepared as much as possible at the off grid homestead.
