Seattle has become the first US city to ban caste discrimination following a vote by the city council.

Councilwoman Kshama Sawant, who authored the legislation, said the move was necessary to prevent caste bias from becoming more prevalent in the US. The caste system in India has been in existence for over 3,000 years, dividing Hindu society into rigid hierarchical groups.

Similar bans on caste bias have been implemented on US university campuses in recent years. Some Hindu American groups opposed the move, arguing that US law already prohibited such discrimination.
