North Korea has fired two short-range missiles into the Sea of Japan, which it said carries nuclear weapons.

It said it is trying to deter the US and Seoul from holding annual military exercises that are designed to help fend off North Korea's nuclear threats.

Kim Yo-Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, said any hostile acts would be met with a "strong and overwhelming" response.
