A 3-minute piece from British broadcaster Sky News, published 20 February 2023. The reporter visits Scranton Army Ammunition Plant, which is part of the production chain for 155mm projectiles.

Video shows a fraction of the production process whereby the steel shell is formed at high temperature with red hot steel. Another plant days away by rail fits the explosive charge into the shells. We are not told where the fuses and guidance devices are manufactured.

This video was produced in the wake of the 14 February 2023 disclosure by NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg that the number of shells fired by the Ukrainian gunners vastly exceeds the supply capacity. The problem is that because we have forgotten how to manufacture with men rather than robots the sums required to start a new production facility are on the order of several billion. And this new facility, as we understand it, will be two years in the making because the robots require to be built. Meanwhile, the Russians had all this figured out months ago. And that means our lag time might be the crucial difference between life and death for our friends.
