Same shit different pile: Orban fears Putin. April 2024 NatCon speech in Brussels
Same shit different pile: Orban fears Putin. April 2024 NatCon speech in Brussels.
This excerpt shows Orban's thoughts regarding the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Hungary wants no part in war "between Slavic brother nations". He presents a superficially convincing argument to his host. To dismantle his argument we observe that if UA is now a protectorate it is only because it has been strangled by RU, who derive benefit from being the only nuclear power in this two-party war. Orban masks his fear of the atom bomb well. We presume similar arguments were once made by Rakosi.
Let's look at the events surrounding the attempted bombing of Israel by Iran on 13 April 2024. Launched were 300 or so drones and missiles. They were unwinged by an ad-hoc group of American, British and French forces, using both ground-based and airborne forces. What interests us here is the reaction of David Cameron of the MFAUK when [0,1] he was confronted by the question: if it's good for Israel, why isn't it good for Ukraine.
Cameron blanched and thrashed. His answer stinks. This is the answer Orban would have given, were Hungary able to afford to field aircraft and a first-world foreign policy. Cameron masks his fear of the atom bomb poorly.
We see no reason why Russia is able to intimidate supposed first-world nations away from freedom of navigation over the Black Sea, or from helping our friends in Ukraine with a #noflyzone over their sovereign territory.
Orban should be more careful in choosing his allies, for some wolf or another is sure to come knocking at Hungary's door.

Ferrari on Cameron - Why can’t the RAF shoot down drones over Ukraine like they do Israel?
15 April 2024 Ferrari on Cameron - Why can’t the RAF shoot down drones over Ukraine like they do Israel?
Cameron is such a dimwit. He gives people the drive to want nuclear weapons. This dimwit controls British foreign policy.

Hamish de Breton Gordon on Russian use of CS gas to flush Ukrainian troops from their trenches
19 April 2024: Hamish de Breton Gordon on Russian use of CS gas to flush Ukrainian troops from their trenches.
Apparently the Ukrainian army has old Soviet masks that don't stop CS gas.
Britain produces a majority of the gas masks for NATO, says he, and he wonders why the allies have yet to supply the Ukrainians with PPE gas masks.
We wonder the same.

Hamish de Bretton Gordon can't explain the UK government's inaction over Russian missiles to Ukraine
19 April 2024: Hamish de Bretton Gordon can't explain the UK government's inaction over Russian missiles that target Ukraine and lay waste to the latter country. HDBG is a former British Army tank commander who frequently comments on military affairs. Here he is interviewed by Times Radio.
The excerpt, from [0], sees the interviewer ask him point blank to compare the recent defense of Israel, which was attacked on Saturday 13 April by a variety of 300 drones and missiles from Iran, and the continued inaction over Ukraine, which is almost nightly being attacked by Russian missiles and drones.
It looks to the interviewer (and yours truly as well) like a failure of diplomacy to have UK government action in Israel and UK government inaction in Ukraine (or over the waters of the Black Sea, as HDBG points out).
The illogical actions taken by the UK government indicates to many observers that we have entered a twilight zone in which it is every man for himself. Forewarned is forearmed.

17 Apr 24: John Pienaar interviews John Ripley of the London Times on Ukraine air defense
17 Apr 24: John Pienaar interviews John Ripley of the London Times on Ukraine air defense, in the wake of the unsuccessful Iranian missile attack on Israel.
European allies are now considering Iron Dome style defences. Ripley feels that British defences are in a pitiable state; and indicates his preferred solution is to focus on regional problems, and leave global problems for others. The ground based air defences (GBAD) expenditure will be significant and room must be made in the budget for these items. Ripley recounts the threat by Putin to Boris Johnson that he would send a missile to 10 Downing Street, and points out that Russian possession of the Baltic enclave called Kaliningrad allows that threat to be made.
Ripley has heard estimates that the 300 Iranian missiles sent were unwinged by $800 million of Israeli Iron Dome GBAD counter-strike missiles.
Ripley points out that the Russians can loft Kalibr missiles to Britain from the Atlantic Ocean via their submarines.
Pienaar wonders whether an increase of defense expenditure from 2% GDP (actual) to 3% GDP would be warranted. Ripley says in response that a root-and-branch reform needs to happen because the British get poor bang for the buck, and that the solution is not to throw more money at the Ministry.

For Greg. This came out of my iPhone immediately after I clicked on your link to YouTube on 11 April 2024.
For the record I don't live in Asia and nobody anywhere near me speaks Chinese.
Does anybody know what language this is, and what are they saying?
<as he walks out of building entrance towards biodisel plant>
Hi my name is Greg Baiden from Penguin ASI in Sudbury Ontario and today I'm going to show you a biodisel plant installation that my partners and I think can help Ukraine to recover from the Russian destruction of energy infrastructure that has impacted cities in the east of the country like Kharkiv. It's now early April 2024 and in the time since Putin's sham election he has tried to bomb the Zaporizhia hydroelectric dam and the thermal power plant in Kharkiv. The plant I'm about to show you can help recover, restore and rebuild the power grid. Then once we sell the first static plant so that you can see it work, we plan to modify the second one so that it is mobile, on a truck and a trailer. But let's not get too far ahead of ourselves. Here's the beast.
<describe the input and the output and indicate the various components>
<maybe with marker and masking tape, so that you can refer to it later on at the chalkboard>
Ok now let's go inside and see how these components cause biofuel like oats and wheat and trees to be mulched and reduced to biodiesel, for use anywhere there is a generator. The nice thing about this idea is that we take surplus grain which Putin prevents you from selling because of his blockade on the Black Sea and turns that surplus grain into usable fuel, for generators and such like.
<by now you are in the building and at the chalkboard>
<on the chalkboard describe in vague details without giving away too much IP your process>
So now that you've seen the engineering let's get down to capabilities. The plant needs as input X Y Z. Let's take pine trees for example. The plant digests D tons per hour and outputs P litres per hour. We need our supply to look like A hectares of logs piled 2 metres high. We haven't experimented with barley yet but reckon the energy content to be roughly the same as pine trees.
<great if you have all this on the chalkboard>
So our energy balance looks like THIS, and our formula looks like THAT, and we make money if we have these CONDITIONS. We can run at a loss as well, given the urgent need in Kharkiv which means that liquid fuel is at a premium.
I really think this device fills a crying need in Kharkiv. And just as soon as we deliver our first static plant we'll be hard at work on a truck-mounted plant, so as to move to our input biomass, rather than have it move to our static location (which is more easy to destroy).
Any questions?

Excellent tutorial by Prof Chris Bishop: how encryption keys work. Key exchange.
Bishop is a brilliant man. I know because a quarter of a century ago I read his textbook that was the seed for ChatGPT and Artificial Intelligence as we know it in April 2024.
This is a very simple and elegant lecture on Key Exchange, the foundation of cryptographic systems, that even a teenager can understand.
This clip from the 2008 Royal Institution Christmas Lectures shows a simple demonstration of how two people can agree on a secret key, even though all of their communications are carried out in public. In the electronic world, secret key exchange allows computers to communicate securely, and is used, for example, when you give your credit card information to an on-line shop.

Russian SecDef Sergei Shoigu site visit to bomb factory in Nizhny Novgorod 21 Mar 24
Russia is now mass producing FAB-3000kg bombs in Nizhny Novgorod. That's 6,600 lbs. Contrast this with the 155mm artillery, of which only 7kg are TNT explosive.
Mind you, they would still need to fly piloted planes over the drop zone. Maybe a Tupolev Tu-22M [0] could do the trick.
This is a record of a factory visit of Sergei Shoigu, Russian Minister of Defence.

Tolstoy reacts on 17 Mar 2024 to Macron's position on troops in Ukraine
Oh dear! Russian Duma [4] deputy speaker Pyotr Tolstoy reacts on 17 March 2024 to Emmanuel Macron's position on sending troops to Ukraine, that had been given in an interview on 14 March.
Tolstoy's given name might be translated out of Cyrillic by Piotr Tolstoy or Petr Tolstoy. Wikipedia gives it as "Pyotr Tolstoy (politician)" [0] where we discover his early career as a French correspondent journalist. He is quite fluent in French and we are surprised to learn that he appears never to have studied in France. We are left to speculate that one trait of the Tolstoy family is its affection to the French language. This is perhaps a vestige of the Russian nobility's use of French as the court language. At any rate the interview is a clue to the political thought prevalent in March 2024 in the United Russia party [1], whose chairman is (or was in 2021) Dmitry Medvedev [2] and one of whose founders is the current Minister of Defence Sergey Shoigu [3].
