Michio Kaku describes our current zero type civilization relative to the first 3 Kardashev scale for measuring types of advanced civilizations based on abilities to harness and use massive energy systems.
Additional to that is a concept termed "The Great Filter" and named for the idea that when intelligent life on a planet reaches a certain level of technology and complexity they wipe themselves out. This may speak to why we are still yet to make alien contact and why we may equally doomed.
