Slab City, AKA the Slabs is a 640 acre unincorporated squatters village located in the Imperial Valley of California. It's just east of the Salton Sea.

The large concrete slabs were left there after Camp Dunlap was torn down.

Camp Dunlap was a Marine Corps base during World War 2.

Most of the summer residents in slap city are eccentrics who have chosen to live off grid for one reason or another.

During the cooler winter months, the slabs fill up with snow birds choosing the rent free and tax free life style.

There's no water or electricity in the slabs, so residents need to bring their water in from neighboring towns and get electricity from generators and or solar panels.

Temperatures in the summer can reach 122 degrees F, average temps in the winter range from the mid 40's to mid 50's. Not bad!

If you travel to the slabs, you'll find several famous large art pieces including East Jesus and Salvation Mountain. You will also find a library and an internet café.

If you feel like staying into the evening, you'll be able to enjoy a free concert at the Range, the local night club in slab city.

There's no local police department, so Keep in mind, drugs such as crystal meth are fairly common.

Make smart decisions and stay at your own risk.

There's one rule in slab city, don't mess with other people's stuff. If you do, you just might find your encampment burned to the ground.

If you do visit, be kind and courteous to the residents and don't take video without their permission.
