Adventure 12: The Middle of Many Nowheres
Surviving outdoors in backcountry wilderness over the years in both good and bad weather.
Two dogs featured here: Bradbury, my older companion, and Orson, his younger protege. (Orson is still alive and well, but retired from long wilderness excursions.)
Sorry if you've already seen this video. Many haven't. I'm reposting in hopes of attracting larger audience.
Gear: Marmot 0°F Down Sleeping Bag. Petzl Tikka XP2 60/120 lumens (discontinued, to my chagrin). Ruffwear Palisades Dog Backpack. Mountain Hardware Softshell jacket (discontinued, to my chagrin). Eastern Mountain Sports Creek Freak backpack (discontinued, to my chagrin). Exped Synmat Air Mattress, without built-in pump (discontinued, to my chagrin), Klymit UL air mattress. The leather fedora is a cheap hat I bought from the gift shop at Grand Canyon and took down to the Colorado River with me.
The BCB British Osprey Pattern-58 Water Bottle and NATO Crusader Cup is with me on most of these excursions. Also the the Agawal Boreal 21 Folding Bow Saw, which I have since stopped taking in favor of the Silky Gomboy. The Grayl Geopress makes an appearance or two, but I no longer buy or use them. Boots are either Merrell Moab Goretex, or Keen Targhee Goretex. UCO Candle Lantern, or Fuererhand Lantern.
REI CO-OP tents: REI Passage 1, and REI Quarterdome 2P UL. I no longer pack the REI Passenger 1, due to weight. The REI Quarterdome 2P UL is a fine ultralight tent, but I have gravitated toward floorless tipi tents exclusively, such as the Black Diamond Mega Light and Luxe Hiking Gear Hexpeak Tipi 2P UL Trekking Pole Tent.
Smartwool glove liners with duct tape as a repair on one of the fingers. I also very effectively repaired my Marmot 0° Goose Down Sleeping Bag with duct tape. You’ll see me using the Crusader Cup with a bail handle over my fire. This was a personal adaptation I made by drilling holes into my Crusader Cup and shaping a clothes hanger for a bail handle.
Poncho is by Frogg Toggs. Wristwatch I wear into backcountry is 15-year-old solar CASIO Pathfinder watch. The thing is a tank. It may outlive me.
