Bottling up painful emotion and trying to pretend it’s not there is understandable when we have so many demands on us from all angles. However, when we squash those feelings down, they don’t go anywhere, they sit, waiting for you to get particularly exhausted and let your guard down. Then something seemingly small happens and you shock yourself by the intensity of emotion that you feel.

If we allow ourselves time to feel whatever is present for us at the time, and soothe ourselves through it, we give that emotion a chance to be processed.
