I know this tip may seem counterintuitive because when we feel anxious all we want to do is make it stop. But most of the methods people use to block it out and push it away don’t work. This can add to that feeling of being out of control, which triggers more anxiety or even panic.

If you allow anxiety permission to be there, you can soothe your way through it and wait for it to take its natural course. Soothing can be things that help you to feel comforted while also keeping you in the present. For example, holding an object that has meaning for you, using a scent or perfume that you associate with safety, comfort or calm, or just focusing on holding someone’s hand.

When you stop fighting anxiety and trust that it will rise and fall, it can take some of the power out of it for you.
