What Do You Feel?

Excerpts from Seeing with New Eyes, by David Powlison

We live in a society where the words "I feel" have become the basis of much decision-making and much popular counsel.

"I've lost all feelings of love for my husband"...therefore, the marriage is hopeless.
"I just don't feel like reading the Bible"...so I don't do it.
"I feel that God is an ogre, just like my own father was"...so tell God you are angry at him.
"Tell me what you feel"... then we'll really know each other.
"Get in touch with your feelings"...for feelings are the magic key to personal integrity.
"Follow your feelings"...for feelings are the authoritative guide to personal fulfillment.

How do you feel about this morass of feelings? The words "I feel" have become an expression used for anything and everything people may experience, think, or want. We need to penetrate the smokescreen of language to discern what people truly mean when they use feeling language. Then we can look at the way the Bible speaks about feelings, as well as the way it redeems the domains that are spoken about as feelings.
