MCCARTHY LOSES 13TH VOTE As Gaetz & Freedom Caucus Resists

Today, January 6th, 2023, Kevin McCarthy lost the vote for speaker of the house of representatives for the 12th and 13th time. This is historic, as the last time the house has been without a speaker for this long was 100 years ago in 1923. Republican members of the house freedom caucus continue to block McCarthy from securing the position of Speaker. Influential congressmen Matt Gaetz and Congresswoman Lauren Boebert both spoke on the house floor in opposition to McCarthy's 12th attempt running for speaker of the house. Gaetz even went on to say that the freedom caucus and McCarthy made progress in negotiations. Apparently the Freedom Caucus wanted certain members to get specific positions, along with wanting restrictions on the speaker and decentralization of power in congress. The House Democrats continue to vote for Hakeem Jefffires. At this point it is unclear how long this will go on for, and how long the house will go without having a speaker. 2023 has certainly been an eventful year for politics to say the least.
