The Getland is a simple wet fly that is similar to the Abbey. One of the things I find curious when learning about flies and their histories is how similar certain patterns can be. Even today, a new fly pattern can become popular and in no time there are "variants" that others are using that make the fly more effective for their fishing circumstances. The question is (and will always be debated I think) as to the need for an entire new name for the "variant" or simply "XYZ Fly ABC variant". The Getland sort of brought this to mind when I ran across it. Did the Abbey come first or the Getland? Maybe they both were developed at the same time in different regions. I do not know enough about either fly to answer those questions. I do know they are both fun to tie and productive flies. - Enjoy
