Audio Only-Barred Owl 🦉 12/31/22 20:12

It's a rainy New Year's Eve night when out of the blue A Barred Owl is heard off-cam. Ten minutes later, the Owl is heard off in the distance doing its regular call for a mate at 20:21:15-20:22 several times then eventually stopping. This could be one of the reasons the Great Horned Owls have not returned back to the nest. The Barred Owls were heard as a duet on 11/29/22 before the Great Horned Owls made their appearance at the nest on 12/06/22 and lastly heard on 12/07/22 when the female used her begging call, the male answered back, and territorial hoots were heard. Since the Barred Owls were heard once again tonight, we know they are trying to claim the territory as the Great Horned Owls were also trying to do. Great Horned Owls usually will not let a Barred Owl claim their territory, but they can also see it as too much competition for prey and find new territory or use another nest from a prior season.
