Retired Major General and Liberal Senator Jim Molan says China would first need to deal with Taiwan's allied forces before attempting to invade Taiwan.
This comes after China sent 71 warplanes and seven ships into the Taiwan Strait on a combat readiness patrol with firepower strike drills.
"Before China embarks on a 1944-style D-Day invasion, it ought to deal with American airfields and bases in Japan, South Korea, Guam, Diego and Alaska by missiles,” Mr Molan told Rita Panahi.
“They have an extraordinary missile force now; they have submarines at sea that can sneak up and wack missiles into any base they want.”
