Driver Crashes Into 18 Wheeler, Intoxication Suspected, LEGGETT, December 16, 2022 - At approximately 12:54 pm on December 16, 2022, an 18 wheeler, driven by Stephen Martin, 55, of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was south-bound on US-59. As Martin was just south of Leggett, a tan 1998 Buick LeSabre, driven by Bret Scroggins, 25, of Corrigan, was in the north-bound lanes and drifted into the south-bound lanes directly in front of Martin. Martin's 18 wheeler struck (glancing blow) the passenger's side of Scroggins' vehicle. The impact caused Scroggins to continue left and off the pavement into a residential yard. Martin's 18 wheeler slid off the pavement to the right and into the north end entrance of Loop 116. Allegiance Ambulance Service was dispatched to the scene along with Deputy Michael McDuffie with the Polk County Sheriff's Office and Troopers Corporal Ramey Bass, Kevin Burman, and Donny Akers with the Texas Highway Patrol. Scroggins was helped from his vehicle by EMS personnel and transported to CHI Livingston Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Martin was physically okay. Scroggins had signs of intoxication and, pending toxicology reports, could be charged with driving while intoxicated. Scroggins' vehicle was recovered by Kwik Tow out of Livingston. Martin's rig was recovered by Clifton Chevrolet out of Corrigan.
