On 11/22/22, I, Sgt J. Preston, was parked at the exit 24 overpass on I 530 southbound, working stationary radar. I observed a blue car drive over the overpass in the left lane at a high rate of speed. I activated my rear radar and obtained a speed of 90 mph in a 75 mph zone. As the vehicle passed, I drove back onto the roadway to initiate a traffic stop for speeding. As I caught up to the vehicle and activated my lights and siren, the operator, who was later identified as Mr. Tyrese Lancaster, quickly accelerated, and sped off; a pursuit was then called.
Mr. Lancaster continued southbound on I 530 at over 140 mph. He then exited I 530 at exit 30. As he approached the bottom of the ramp, he sped up again, driving across State Highway 104, then back onto the southbound entrance ramp, where he began to travel back south. As we continued south, he began weaving in and out of traffic and driving on the shoulder. As we approached the exit ramp 32 overpass area, Trooper (TRP.) T. Pratt joined the pursuit becoming the primary unit. I then took over secondary duties as the liaison between us and dispatch. As we approached the 34-mile marker area Trooper First Class (TFC.) D. Hinton, who was driving an ASP Low Profile Vehicle (LPV), joined the pursuit taking over the primary position from TRP. Pratt, who was still attempting to catch up to the suspect's vehicle.
As Mr. Lancaster drove onto exit ramp 35, he attempted to negotiate the ramp but lost control of his vehicle, causing it to impact the guard rail creating a large plume of dust. As his vehicle came to rest on top of the overpass, TFC. Hinton was able to stop blocking half the travel portion of the roadway. TRP. Pratt simultaneously drove through the plume of dust and began braking. He was able to steer clear of TFC. Hinton's unit, but he could not avoid impacting the suspect's vehicle, which was disabled on the remaining portion of the roadway.
The front bumper of TRP. Pratt's unit collided with the front bumper of the suspect's vehicle. Mr. Lancaster was then taken into custody without further incident. During the administrative inventory of the vehicle, I found a gym bag with men's clothing in the rear seat that contained four unopened 12 oz. Bud-Light beers (Suspect is 19 years old). EASI ambulance services treated him at the scene for minor scrapes and bruises. TRP Pratt was also assessed at the scene but did not require transport. Mr. Lancaster was transported to Troop E Headquarters for questioning and then to the Dub Brassell Detention Center.
He was booked into the jail on the following charges felony citation, Fleeing-in Vehicle or Convey –Substantial Danger of Death 5-54-125 (d), misdemeanor citation # 000A204233 Speeding 1-15 mph over limit 27-51-201, Reckless Driving – 1st Off. 27-50- 302, No Seat Belt 27-37-702, and Possession or Purchase of Alcohol by Minor 3-3-203.03.
