"Laugh, Laugh," written by guitarist Ron Elliott, was the Beau Brummels' first entry onto the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1964 and rose to the #15 position in 1965 (Whitburn, 2013). The recording was produced by Sylvester Stewart (aka "Sly Stone") (Last, 2011). The Beau Brummels, a San Francisco based band, is "acknowledged by some as the first true folk-rock group, predating the Byrds. They are credited as the first American band to successfully integrate the British sound. They anticipated the psychedelic themes that would characterize the San Francisco sound" (S. Salter, encyclopedia, 2022).
