Venice floodgates protect the city from waters amid heavy rains

Venice's system of floodgates managed to shield the historic Saint Mark's Square from exceptionally high tides, as heavy rains have been hitting Italy.
Floods, however, have swept the beaches of Chioggia and Sottomarina, affecting streets, buildings and entire stretches of sandy shores.
