Fans pour into Doha airport for World Cup, including Carles Puyol

Crowds of international fans poured into Hamad International Airport in Doha on the eve of the World Cup tournament.

Among the faces that emerged into the arrival hall was that of Spanish former football player Carles Puyol, who played for Barcelona.

Puyol surprised fans and stopped to take photos.

Lupe Merono, a 74-year-old Ecuadorian fan, made it to her first World Cup to cheer on her team playing the opening match against the host country.

"This is the first time that I ever come to a World Cup and I am 74 years old, so this is it for me. I am looking forward to it and I cannot wait to see the game," she said.

Mauri Baraldi, a fan from Argentina has "very high expectations" for his team.

"We expect everything from Messi. We want to win the Cup. And well, until today I'm not worried at all. The only thing I'm worried about would be Brazil in the final. But we're going to beat them," Baraldi said.

Qatar will be the home of the FIFA World Cup beginning Nov. 20, marking the first time the Mideast has hosted the world-watched tournament.

This year's World Cup also marks the first time it will be played in November and December, in part due to the sweltering summer heat of this small, energy-rich desert sheikhdom on the Arabian Peninsula.
