Trials of the Century (Ep. 22): The Trial of Sam Sheppard

Dr. Samuel Holmes Sheppard was arrested on July 30, 1954, for the murder of his wife, Marilyn Reese Sheppard, who was found dead on July 4, 1954, in the marital home, just outside of Cleveland, OH. Sheppard claimed that a bushy-haired intruder had killed his wife, who he then chased to the beach where he was knocked unconscious.

Sheppard maintained his innocence, but Cleveland newspapers demanded his arrest, alleging that the family was conspiring to shield him from authorities. After a 9-week jury trial (described as a "carnival atmosphere"), Sheppard was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to live in prison. He remained incarcerated until, ten years later, F. Lee Bailey secured his release. Join us this week as we discuss the trial that gave rise to feature films, like: The Fugitive.
