The Innocence Chronicles | Ep. 03 - Shaken Baby Syndrome and the Conviction of Kim Hoover-Moore

On November 7, 2003, Kim Hoover-Moore was convicted of murder, involuntary manslaughter, felonious assault, and endangering a child. The conviction arose after the death of a 7-month-old child she cared for, whose death was attributed to Shaken Baby Syndrome.

SBS is said to arise when an infant is shaken so hard that the brain rotates inside the skull (think extreme whiplash in a car accident), which causes brain injury without external signs of injury (often). Distinguished by a "triad" of symptoms (brain swelling, brain hemorrhaging, and retinal hemorrhaging), SBS is often interpreted to indicate that the child has been violently shaken, with suggestions that the last person to have physical care of the child is believed to have caused the injuries.

Kim Hoover-Moore spent 19 years in prison before medical advances that assist in our understanding of brain injury exonerated her. @Scott Cardinal joins me to discuss this week's episode of The Innocence Chronicles.
