Seek God. Seek is a powerful action word! It means we are searching, actively looking, and wanting.

We’ve all searched, sometimes anxiously, for misplaced things like our keys, wallet or phone. Some of us have exhaustively searched for the right job, right spouse or the right house to buy. Sometimes seeking can even feel desperate, like a mom losing her child in a department store, frantically calling her child’s name, each time louder than the last.

Yes, we all know about seeking, searching and wanting. In fact, seeking God is found through the whole Bible. Think of Moses – 4,000 years ago when he wrote: “Seek the Lord your God and you will find him!” Deuteronomy 4:29

Fast forward a thousand years and God tells us in Proverbs: “those who seek me diligently find me.” Proverbs 8:17

You’ll never guess what God said through the prophet Jeremiah: “You will seek me and find me, when you seek me with all your heart.” Jeremiah 29:13

No wonder so many of the Psalms encourage us to seek God. Psalm 105 says, “Search for the Lord and for his strength, and keep on searching” (Ps 105:4). My favorite is Psalm 63 as we picture David hiding in a dessert cave as he must have cried out loud, “O God, you are my God; earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you; my flesh faints for you, as in a dry and weary land where there is no water. Psalm 63:1

With all this seeking in mind, is there any wonder that Jesus said, “Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and God will give you everything you need” Matthew 6:33. He later concluded his Sermon on the Mount by quoting Moses very words, “Seek God and you will find him” (Mt 7:7).

Yes, search for God, seek God in your life, look for God’s wisdom. Keep on searching. But unlike frantically searching for your lost child, searching for God only brings peace. Paul describes it as a peace that surpasses all understanding (Phil 4:7)!!

As for the mom with the lost child, within seconds all the shoppers joined the search. For two long minutes everyone called the boy, until he gleefully jumped out of a circular clothing rack and screamed in delight, “Here I am!”

“Here I am!” That’s what God says to us. He doesn’t play games with us or keep us guessing, because he wants us to be close with him. He wants us to seek him! And when we do, he most certainly will be found.
