Dubai Creek Tower
The United Arab Emirates latest venture - the Dubai Creek Tower - was set to become the tallest man-made structure in the world. The tower was most likely built as a response to Saudi Arabia's Jeddah Tower. The Jeddah Tower, which would be at least 1000 meters high,
The Jeddah Tower construction has given the developers in Dubai an opportunity to outshine their rivals even further by planning to build the tallest tower in the world, again. The Burj Khalifa is currently the tallest building with a height of 828 meters, so they originally planned for something even higher at around 1,400 meters to try and compete with Jeddah Tower. The official height of the tower was never revealed, probably because they don’t want to give any clues to the competition.
With a bird's eye view of the city and 10 viewing platforms, Dubai Creek Tower would have been the tallest building in the world. However, construction was soon stopped after its foundation was completed.
Construction of the Jeddah Tower in Saudi Arabia stopped around the same time that work on Dubai Creek Tower halted. It doesn't seem very coincidental that once the developers of Dubai Creek Tower were no longer threatened by their competition, they decided to stop working on it too. Emaar Properties, the owner of the project, claims that the COVID-19 pandemic is stopping their project from going 100% through, but they remain hopeful it will be completed by 2022. Even so, no visible progress has been made since the towers stop in 2018.
But the failure of Jeddah Tower may not be the only reason Dubai Creek Tower can fail. No one has ever created a building this high before. Steel cables reaching out to the top of the tower would need to stretch for over a kilometer.
This cable net might be too big to work with at the moment and It might not be possible for us to reach this height with the materials and technologies we have right now.
Other than complex engineering issues, it is still unclear whether or not the tower could ever compete with Jeddah Tower to become the tallest building in the world. There has been confusion lately on what exactly qualifies as a skyscraper. The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat says that at least 50% of the tower needs to be habitable in order to qualify as a skyscraper, but Dubai Creek Tower misses this target by 20%.
