Brazil's electoral authority has announced on 31 October that Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 77, of the leftist Workers' Party defeated incumbent Jair Bolsonaro to become the country's next President.

Da Silva received 50.9% votes. He last served as President from 2003 to 2010. President Barack Obama at that time called him "the most popular politician on Earth." His approval rating was around 90% when he was impeached in December 2010.

Da Silva is also remembered for his administration's involvement in vast corruption. He spent much of 2018 and 2019 behind bars. He was sentenced to 12 years in jail but was released after 580 days on a technicality.
