With the world saved from being turned into a giant fuzzball, let us now explore Splatoon 3's brand new mode, Tableturf Battle!

Tableturf Battle is a turn-based collectible card game with a similar premise to Turf War. Players lay down one card per turn on the grid with the goal of laying down more ink on the grid than their opponent at the end of 12 turns. Players must play their cards adjacent to a square of their own ink and can't play over their opponent's ink or play past a wall. If two players play their cards on the same square of ink, then the card that has the lower number of ink spaces takes priority and will take any overlapping squares. If both cards have the same number, then the squares that the two cards overlap become an uninkable wall. Most cards have special squares on them. When you completely surround a special square with ink (either yours or your opponent's), you will gain one special point. Build up enough, and you can use a Special Attack with your card (special point cost is indicated on the card). Special Attacks must be played adjacent to one of your special squares and is the only way to paint over your opponent's ink. If you don't have space to play a card or enough special points to use a special attack, you must pass your turn and discard one of your cards, though passing will give you a free special point. At the end of 12 turns, the player who has more ink on the grid wins.

There are 19 computer-controlled Splatsville Locals to fight with, but the last 8 can only be faced after you complete the Story Mode. For each opponent, only Level 1 is available at the start. Win 3 times at Level 1 to unlock Level 2. Win 3 times at Level 2 to unlock Level 3. For non-Jelly enemies, winning 30 times at Level 3 will unlock that character's Card Sleeve.

There are also other players in Splatsville holding a deck of cards around the Tableturf arena. You can talk to them to battle them as well, though you'll just be facing an AI using their deck. A future update will allow for live PvP Tableturf battles, though.

Our first opponent: Baby Jelly! Baby Jelly's deck seems to specialize in accumulating special points.
