14th in our series the Prophet Zephaniah

I. God’s Judgment against the Assyrian Empire - Zephaniah 2:13-14
* A. The worlds first Super-power empire would be utterly destroyed
* B. God’s history with the Assyrian Empire
* 1. Jonah prophesied its Destruction (760BC) - Jonah 3:4
* a. Nineveh repented of their great wickedness - Jonah 3:5-9
* b. God showed them mercy - Jonah 3:10
* 2. But they returned to their wicked ways, and Nahum prophesied their destruction (660BC) - Nahum 2:6, 2:13-3:7
* a. Jonah revealed God’s mercy to them
* b. Nahum revealed God’s judgment to them
* 3. Destruction complete in 612BC when the Babylonians conquered the Assyrian Empire
* a. A destruction so complete Nineveh’s location was lost for 2300 years
* b. It became the dwelling place of wild beasts
* C. Yet God used Assyrian to punish the 10 Northern Tribes in 722BC (38 years after Jonah) - Isaiah 10:5-6

II. The Empire of Idolatry - Zephaniah 2:15
* A. I am it! - blasphemous rejection of God’s sovereignty
* 1. Believing they were a self-made empire
* 2. Words God uses regarding Himself - Isaiah 46:9-10
*  B. God commands all men everywhere to repent - Acts 17:30
* 1. Jesus first word preached, “Repent” - Mark 1:15
* 2. The Apostles all preached repentance
* 3. The Gospel isn’t the Gospel without repentance
* 4. Ongoing repentance is the path of Disciples who are truly following Jesus Christ - Psalm 139:23-24
