British Prime Minister Liz Truss announces her resignation

Liz Truss resigns as UK prime minister with the new Tory leader to be in place by 28 October. Truss has resigned as prime minister after just 45 days in office.

The announcement, made by Truss outside Downing Street comes after weeks of criticism from her opponents and members of own her Conservative Party and the resignation of two of her top Cabinet picks.
