On February 22nd 2011, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake devastated the city of Christchurch, New Zealand, killing 185 people. In the midst of the devastation, Andy and Amber Cleverley were trapped at the top of a high rise hotel, where they met an American man they knew only as Jeremy. In the most dire of life circumstances - trapped and thinking the building was going to collapse in the earthquake aftershocks - they forged a bond, while supporting each other and talking about what they would change in their lives if they managed to escape the building and survive. Many terrifying hours later, they were rescued, only to be separated in the chaos that followed. They never saw each other again. In the years to come, Andy and Amber battled serious post-traumatic stress and depression. It took all their strength to rebuild their lives and try to change them in the way they had talked about in the ruins of that high rise building. Seven years later, with a new and healthy life on the road in a house bus, Andy and Amber's thoughts turn back to the man they bonded with at the top of that crumbling building. What has become of Jeremy? Has he gone through any of the same struggles they have? Has he tried to build a new life too? Armed with the barest of information, Andy and Amber set out to find Jeremy.

Part 1 revisits the terrifying day of the earthquake and how Andy and Amber's traumatic experience later affected their mental health, with Andy suffering PTSD and Amber post-natal depression. As Andy and Amber begin the slow climb back from their rock bottom, they start to think about finding a new and better way to live - the new life they had promised they would seek out if they did, in fact, escape that collapsing building.
