Planting cool season crops in a raised garden bed for my fall garden.
10/11/2022 Planting cool season crops in a raised garden bed for my fall garden.
Seedlings planted in the garden bed:
Pak Choi
Bloomsdale long standing spinach
Arcadia hybrid spinach
Ragged Jack / Red Russian Kale
First task remove mulch layer. Never plant directly into mulch always plant into soil then cover with mulch. I like to dig deeper then the size of container I’m planting. This allows the soil under the plant to get loosened up and will make it easier for the roots to dig deeper. Back filling the seedlings, I try to push down on the soil near the plant but not directly in the hole the seedling was just planted. I don’t want to compact the soil for the new plant. Finally, I mulched the seedlings and watered them in so the to help remove some of the air pockets and to make sure there is good root to soil contact to help prevent transplant shock and help the plants to get established quicker.
After the plants were in the ground for around a week. The low temperature was supposed to go down to 39 and 40 degrees F for two nights. I covered the garden with frost blankets to protect them and made a short: Frost blankets and fertilizing #shorts
