Great soil for blueberries Peat moss is great for blueberries because they like acidic soil. The mix I used today is 2 parts peat moss and 1 part compost. Peat moss is well draining but also has good moisture retaining qualities. Compost helps to add biology to the new plants, it has moisture retention that will help to keep the peat moss moist (preventing it from going hydrophobic as quickly), and helps to add a natural fertilizer to the planting hole. These nutrients should not burn or injure the roots of the new planting. For this instance the compost has life like worms that will continue to make castings in and around the planting hole. After you plant new items water everything in well so the roots are able to be covered with the new soil mixture. Roots need a loose well draining soil that retains moisture but not with large air pockets. The water helps to push soil into those areas that were missing soil around the roots. 4/3/2024 Worm Wednesday Feeding Virginia worm bin update Red wiggler worm bin is looking good. Plenty of bedding for the worms. I gave it a good mix to help cover the fine shredded paper with the castings that were in the bin. There was a small banana peel still in the bin and I added a frozen food ball consisting of the pulp from my brothers juicing. 3/27/2024 Worm Wednesday Feeding Vermihut Rotating Trays This check in I didn’t find any food scraps from 2 weeks ago. Today is the day I’m rotating the trays, the feeding tray is going into the middle to finish up. The middle tray is moving to the top for feeding. And the bottom tray I added some paper last feeding and that is staying in the bottom. I feed the pulp from a juicer and some watermelon to help attract the worms into the feeding zone. As usual I added ground eggshells to the feeding area and after covering with the bedding. I sprinkled some worm chow on top for the red wigglers. Saving okra seeds When harvesting okra seeds they should not be white seeds. Black to brown are seeds that should be viable for next season. The pods will turn from a green to a white with brown stripes. This is a good indication that the seeds are ready to be harvested.

Flipping a geobin compost pile First we removed all compost from the geobin. The total volume of the bin is 246 gallons when full. For compost volume is key, you are looking for a volume that is 3’x3’x3’ is ideal. You can compost in smaller quantities, it may take longer and larger items may take multiple times in the compost pile to breakdown. Next to reshape the geobin I leave small stakes in the ground to hold and maintain shape. I added about 8-10 inches of compost, then some chopped up garden scraps and some leaves, followed by around 2 inches of aged horse manure and watering in at each new level. Then repeat the process until the geobin was full. Now this geobin will sit from October until spring of 2024. In spring all of the garden beds and grow bags will get topped off with compost. 10/25/2023 Worm Wednesday Feeding, Harvest of the Vermihut and 37th feeding The harvest tray sat as the top tray for a week to allow the red wigglers to head down into the feeding area. I would agitate the bin to help entice the worms to move out of the vermicompost. I was able to harvest 3 containers worth of castings and it took around 40-50 minutes to feed and harvest the Vermihut system. I feed pulp from the juicer and sprinkled ground egg shells onto the feeding area. After covering I added some worm chow and checked the progress of the levels of the tower. I found worms at the bottom cover and basin of the tower and moved those worms back to the feeding tray.
