Session 1: Loving God The First and Great Commandment

Notes: shorturl.at/dxI68

Jesus’ statement in Matthew 22:37-38 is one of the most significant statements in Scripture. It is God’s mission statement for the human race and, thus, the most reliable measurement of success at the judgment seat of Christ. It has many implications—it reveals God’s personality, our value, how we function, our destiny, and how we should view and value others (since God loves them deeply). “‘You shall love the Lord…with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment.” (Mt. 22:37-38)

The first commandment does not start with us, but with God who loves us with all His heart and in the same intensity that He loves inside the fellowship of the Trinity. This is a most dynamic truth or which we say, “Thank You,” and ask the Spirit to reveal more of God’s love for us and to impart more love for God in us. To “abide in love” is to continually realign our heart to His love.

“As the Father loved Me, I also have loved you; abide in My love.” (Jn. 15:9)

  • With all due respect: When Jesus was distressed whom did he pray to? Jesus prayed to God directly: Matthew 26:39 - And He went a little beyond them, and fell on His face and prayed, saying, "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me; yet not as I will, but as You will." If you follow Jesus the you should the same as he did, worship God the way he did. Whom did Jesus ask us to pray to? Jesus asked us to pray to God directly: Matthew 6:9 - In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name. 6:10 - Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven. 6-11 - Give us this day our daily bread. 6:12 - And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors. 6:13 - And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one. For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen. And whom did Jesus ask us to love? Jesus asked us to love God: Matthew 22:35-39 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ "On these two commandments depend the whole Law and the Prophets." God is not the author of confusion so if Jesus wanted his followers to worship him he would have said so, but he did not (there was no need for him to not to be direct).
