He then begins his test by holding out a globe that he claims to contain the soul of May Parker. He tells Peter that the globe has the power to restore Aunt May to life and good health. However, this comes at a cost, telling him that in exchange it could snuff out a number of lives. He skirts around the actual number, telling the web-slinger that it could be as many as 100 people, or it could be only one insignificant soul. However, the Scarlet Spider crushes the globe into bits, seemingly sending the soul of Aunt May back into the afterlife. He refuses to believe any of this has been happening, believing that this is merely a series of illusions. However, Judas says he is a being of great power, and decides to show him what the future has in store for him. Bringing him back to reality, he shows him a future where Manhattan is in ruins. This darkly-veiled video attempts to showcase the vast, dystopian capabilities of the US Army’s intelligence operations with a movie trailer-style short film about how the “ghosts in the machine” are able to secretly manipulate the public through targeted information attacks and new technologies. In true deep state form, the video begins by flashing the question “Who’s pulling the strings?” almost as a taunt toward the conspiracy claims. Unless you knew beforehand that this was a production of the US Army, it would almost be impossible to tell what the video is for, until it makes a grand reveal at the end. What’s most unsettling about the video is that it has creepy music running throughout. Desmond Lowden's script is prophetic in several respects. Although its predicted date of the moon landing significantly overshoots the reality, it strikingly pre-empts subsequent conspiracy theories which suggested the event was faked in a film studio. This is made explicit when JG refers to a 'Ministry of Morality', whose name recalls Orwell's ministries of Truth, Love and Plenty. Whereas Orwell's novel depicts an overtly oppressed Britain, Lowden suggests that in 1968 similar control could be effected invisibly via manipulation of the media. And just as J.G. is no ordinary producer, this is no ordinary job offer. Larkin’s new role will be t help J.G. and CWNS literally manufacture the news – during the interview J.G. reveals that they’ve already started to “plan the news for 1973… news is the most highly developed form of fiction, the most difficult.” At the time the play was written, Vietnam had emerged as the first 'television war', and the extent of the medium's influence on the public, particularly in political and commercial arenas, was just beginning to be recognized. In this context, Lowden's extrapolation is as astute as it is grimly playful. With media manipulation now a routine feature of regimes such as China, North Korea and Iran, and increasing concern at the agenda-setting political power of certain partisan news services in Europe and the US, 'The News-Benders' is perhaps even more pertinent now than it was in 1968.
