This Body is Not Me (Spiritual Poetry) - Thich Nhat Hanh

Thich Nhat Hanh was arguably one of the greatest spiritual teachers in our modern era. He was known primarily for his teachings on inner peace, nonviolence, and mindfulness, but before he left this world he gave us a remarkable poem describing the eternal nature of our Soul.

"This Body Is Not Mine" reminds me a lot of Rumi's "When I Die," and like Rumi, Thich Nhat Hanh so eloquently describes why you will never die. Why even though our bodies will one day wither and die, our Soul continues on meeting each other again in every life form and in every moment.

Full Poem:

This body is not me.
I am not limited by this body.
I am life without boundaries.
I have never been born,
and I shall never die.

Look at the ocean and the sky filled with stars,
manifestations from my wondrous true mind.

Since before time, I have been free.
Birth and death are only doors through which we pass,
sacred thresholds on our journey.
Birth and death are a game of hide-and-seek.

So laugh with me,
hold my hand,
let us say good-bye,
say good-bye, to meet again soon.

We meet today.
We will meet again tomorrow.
We will meet at the source every moment.
We meet each other in all forms of life.

~ Thich Nhat Hanh
