While the exact dates are debated, historians believe he lived sometime between the 6th and 4th centuries BCE. Early Life and Renunciation: Born into a royal family in Lumbini (present-day Nepal), Siddhartha Gautama lived a sheltered life of luxury. However, according to Buddhist tradition, he became increasingly troubled by the suffering he encountered outside the palace walls. Witnessing illness, old age, and death sparked a deep desire to understand the nature of suffering and how to overcome it. At the age of 29, Siddhartha renounced his royal life and embarked on a spiritual quest for liberation. He spent years practicing asceticism and meditation with various teachers, seeking the root cause of suffering and the path to enlightenment. The Awakening: After years of intense practice and self-denial, Siddhartha Gautama reached a state of perfect enlightenment while meditating under a Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya (present-day India). This is known as his "awakening" or "enlightenment." He became known as the Buddha, which translates to "the Awakened One." The Dhammapada and Teachings: The Buddha spent the rest of his life traveling throughout India, sharing his insights and teachings with anyone who would listen. The Dhammapada is one of the most well-known collections of his teachings. Early Life (1879-1895): Born into a devout Brahmin family in South India, Ramana displayed an introspective nature from a young age. While seemingly ordinary, accounts suggest he had mystical experiences even in his childhood. Spiritual Awakening (1895): At the tender age of 16, Ramana underwent a profound spiritual awakening. He described a sudden and intense fear of death, which led him to contemplate the nature of the Self. This experience transformed him, and he soon left home for Arunachala, a sacred mountain in South India, considered the embodiment of Lord Shiva. Life at Arunachala (1896-1950): Ramana spent most of his remaining years living near Arunachala. Initially, he practiced intense austerities and meditation in silence, often in caves or temples. They sought a return to the order's original contemplative and austere values, establishing the Discalced Carmelites. John, deeply committed to a life of prayer and solitude, exemplified the ascetic ideals of the movement. John of the Cross's spiritual journey is encapsulated in his writings, particularly in works like "The Ascent of Mount Carmel" and "The Dark Night of the Soul." These texts explore the soul's mystical union with God, emphasizing purification and the journey towards divine love. St. John of the Cross was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XIII in 1726, and he was later declared a Doctor of the Church by Pope Pius XI in 1926.
