Who Are WE? – Rumi Poem

Who am I? Who are we?

It's one of the most asked questions we will ever ask ourselves, because life can seem empty and meaningless if we don't know our origin, identity, or purpose.

In a mad pursuit to find the answers to these questions, we often spend our whole lives unconsciously trying to develop an identity, thinking that our individuality and uniqueness is essential.

But in this Rumi poem, we learn that everything we do is actually a reflection of our Source: God. And who we are, beneath all the delusions we tell ourselves, is actually God.

Many Buddhist teachings describe this as nonduality or Oneness, and Rumi seemed to have believed or at least entertained the same notion: that we are not really separate from our Source. Rather, it is our mind (as controlled by the ego), which has instilled in us the belief that we are something and someone different.

Finding yourself has never been made any easier when you can take a deep breath and know that your true identity has always been with you—and within you—all this time.

You can drop all the stress, pressure, anxiety, and fear of trying to develop an identity, and instead go deeper in your spiritual journey to experience this spiritual awakening.

Full poem:

If we come to sleep
we are His drowsy ones.
And if we come to wake
we are in His hands.

If we come to weeping
we are His cloud full of raindrops.
And if we come to laughing
we are His lightning in that moment.

If we come to anger and battle
it is the reflection of His wrath.
And if we come to peace and pardon
it is the reflection of His love.

Who are we in this complicated world?”
